Formed in 1995, we are a small but perfectly formed architectural design practice offering practical experience, a hands-on approach and design flair. We don’t design offices, skyscrapers, bridges and other large scale structures, but concentrate on what we’ve become really good at – turning mostly unloved and forgotten buildings into amazing homes.
Here at our offices on the South Bank we share more than the rich cultural heritage of this creative hotspot on the river Thames; we share a philosophy – an approach to architecture and interior design which puts people and creativity at the very heart of our business. We call it ‘In-Out Design’ because the starting point for all our work is flesh and bone followed by bricks and mortar. Put simply it means we spend time developing human "plans" for a building and then start to figure out how we can translate those human needs and ideas into architectural plans - the end product of which are practical, useful and attractive buildings.
After 20 years in business and with many a project under our belt, we know a thing or two about designing and building. We enjoy the prospect of designing a building from scratch but are inspired with the challenges of working with unloved or forgotten buildings. We are lifelong members of SPAB and work using traditional building methods and materials but are equally enthused with the latest technologies both sustainable and innovative. We believe in adopting the appropriate design and construction approach on a project by project basis.
As a group we share a passion for design and innovation, and between us bring a wealth of knowledge from every corner of the design field. Our architectural design and construction skills have not only wowed our clients but have won awards and been the subject of a couple of Channel 4 Grand Designs programmes.
At the heart of our success is that we derive enjoyment of working with people, whether clients, consultants or contractors. We are also consummate negotiators and have a good success rate with local planning departments.
We have a set of guiding principles that shape the way we do business. Our work must be designed to the highest standards achieveable, be remarkable and built robustly.
Our clients must derive true value from our work, whether that be emotional, financial or indeed both.
Finally, and of perhaps of most importance, we believe in listening carefully to our clients, consultants and contractors to ensure we are delivering and building to the clients requirements - not ours.
We have over the years had the good luck of becoming well-connected in every area of the industry. Our relationships with people who matter are a major element of our success to date. From property and construction experts to engineers and arboriculturists, from planning specialists to local estate agents - we have an enviable network of consultants at all levels.
We are a tight team of professionals who work together on every project. Unlike larger design practices, we make sure that we all understand and are available for the project - be that client, consultant or contractor. Where ever people are based we make sure we are available via technology and in person around the clock throughout the whole project - from beginning to end... and beyond.
We believe that buildings and spaces are only truly successful if they interact positively with the people that live in them. Honesty, trust and understanding lie firmly at the heart of our projects. We are proud of our design ability but not too proud to take a step back and let others contribute to the design and building process. By really listening to our clients, consultants, contractors and community, and becoming aware of their hopes, concerns and expectations, are we able to achieve success that please, satisfy and inspire.
